Overview - Following a series of derailments in 2009, KiwiRail deferred repairs and suspended operations over the SOL until a decison was made on the future of the SOL. It is well known that had the derailments not occurred the SOL would still be in use today. The cause of the derailments are said to be track related. Our campaign is to encourage the Government and KiwiRail to repair and maintain the SOL and most importantly, use the SOL. The SOL is strategically important transport infrastructure, it enables an overnight freight service to and from Auckland, provides an important transport option for the Taranaki region and allows for freight to still be carried to and from the Taranaki if either the line from Hawera to Marton or Okahukura to Marton are out of operation, a plan b which has been used regularly in the past.
It cannot be ignored that the SOL has survived over 16 years of privatisation and now due to neglect and a lack of willing to see in the future, it faces closure - LET'S WORK HARD TOGETHER TO SAVE THE SOL!
